Who Is the Holy Spirit? (Part 1)

September 25, 2022 Speaker: Dr. Dave Berry Series: Following Jesus Together

Topic: Trinity, Holy Spirit Scripture: John 14:15–18

The Holy Spirit is Your Paraclete, So You Must:

  1. Understand Who He Is
    • Genesis 1:1-2
    • Exodus 31:1-6
    • Numbers 11:29
    • Ezekiel 36:25-27
  2. Be Encouraged by His Ongoing Ministry
    • John 14:15-17a
    • “The title ‘Paraclete” expresses the intimate presence of God with His people, a presence that formally began with the incarnation and will carry on [into] the new creation. For this reason, the title ‘Paraclete’ refers to the
ministerial office of the Trinitarian God... [for His people], occupied by both the Son of God and the Spirit of God. First Jesus, and now the Spirit, witness to God [the Father], speak on behalf of God [the Father], console, guide, and teach the way of God, and [are] the work of God. This is why “Paraclete” cannot be translated into any one word or concept...For ‘Paraclete’ is the title of an office of God, the one from which He ministers to [His people] He loves. It is a term that guarantees that God is present and that nothing — neither death nor life, neither angles or demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any power, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation— can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ our Lord” (Klink, Zondervan Ex Com NT, 634–635).
  3. Cherish His Indwelling Presence
    • John 14:17b-18
